A group of Langley Township residents has filed a petition with the BC Supreme Court to remove MLA Misty Van Popta from Township Council. As reported by the Langley Advance Times, the petition argues that holding both positions at the same time creates a conflict of interest.

Concerns about Van Popta receiving two taxpayer funded salaries have been raised since she was elected as an MLA. Critics say serving in both roles could make it difficult to properly represent either position. Despite these concerns, Mayor Eric Woodward and his supporters on council have not addressed the issue. Some believe this is because a by-election could shift the balance of power in Township Council.

This is not the first time council has considered changes related to vacant seats. Last November, Woodward’s council discussed a rule that would allow an empty council seat to remain unfilled instead of holding a by-election. That discussion raised concerns about how council decisions affect local democracy.

As Woodward faces growing criticism about his leadership and speculation about whether he will seek another term, the court’s decision in this case could have a lasting impact on Langley politics.
